Movie Review: It’s Kind of a Funny Story

Times got you beat down, feeling depressed or just not feeling like the young buck or gal you once were. Then “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a good movie for you.  Here is a review.

Craig(Keir Gilchrist) is a teenager who has recently thought of doing something very drastic.  His life appears to be out of order and out of whack and even thinks of killing himself.  Craig decides that maybe he should head to the hospital and get help as something just doesn’t feel right.  He seeks the help of  a local hospital and self admits to having suicidal thoughts.  Now thinking a quick fix is in order the hospital commits Craig to five days of in patient treatment.  Although not with other teenagers but the adult patients of Three North.  Craig might of just asked for more than what he bargained for as maybe his problems are not so bad after-all, after seeing the folks of Three North.

Those folks include Bobby(Zach Galfianakis) a older funny gentleman that has already spoken with Craig on his entrance to Three North. However Craig thought Bobby was a doctor but Bobby is a patient and someone who occasionally sneaks down to the ER where the best coffee is served.  Bobby becomes Craig’s tour guide through Three North where some of the most disturbed call this place home.  Bobby really shows Craig that his problems are merely small compared to the rest of the residents, including a girl named Noelle.

Noelle(Emma Roberts) is a teenager that Craig sees as someone very attractive but not like the girls from Craig’s high school and not like his best friend’s girlfriend Mia(Zoe Kravitz) who Craig has had feelings for awhile now.  Noelle seems cool but she too has a had a past with suicidal thoughts and the reason she stays with the rest of Three North.  Craig despite his instant denial of having problems and wanting a quick fix just might of landed himself in a place where even his parents could not help.  With the help of Bobby, Dr. Minerva, Noelle  and the folks Craig might just find the resolve he needs to handle the daily stress of teenage life.

“It’s Kind of A funny Story” is a witty smart movie that makes people think that maybe they don’t have it so bad after-all.  Sure life is hard and yes depression is serious and people can’t live within this world without the help of medicine and proper treatment.  Life is sometimes even seen as unfair and unjustified but look through the eyes of someone else before you make that final judgment.  This review gives this movie Three and a Half Stars.  Honestly Zach Galifianakis as Bobby plays one of his best roles as a somewhat calm, humorous but also a disturbed patient of Three North. This movie reminds me of the classic movie of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest in some ways and may make you watch that one after this movie.

“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” also stars funny man Jim Gaffigan as Craig’s father and Lauren Graham as Craig’s mother who is kind of a cool mother.
